Instead of blaming other people or things of getting in your way you need to take responsibility for your own life. If you complete this step you are one step closer to completing all the habits you need to be successful. Instead of being reactive try to be proactive. Reactive people make choices based on impulse but proactive people think twice before they talk or make an action. If you are thinking with these words;
I'll try, theres nothing I can do, I can't, and I have to, you are definitely using reactive language. If you start to use words like; I'll do it, I can do better than that, and let's look at all our options, you are taking responsibility for you life and using proactive language. We can't control everything but we can control how we will respond to what happens to us. Ways you can help with being proactive is with your "power tools" which are: -Self-Awareness(Observe your thoughts and actions) -Conscience(Know right from wrong) -Imagination(Envision new possibilities) -Willpower(Having the power to choose)

Before we change the world we need to start tiny and change ourselves. From how we act to how we talk. To raise you self esteem and confidence there is a thing call the personal bank account which can help you succeed in life. A personal bank account is this certain idea in you mind which creates a bank. With this bank you add points on money into it if you do something good and take some out if you do something bad. What you can do to deposit points is to keep promises with yourself so you don't feel you are cheating your mind, doing acts of kindness which are towards others, being honest to yourself and others around you, tapping into your talents to show your skills in life and have a better time living, and renewing yourself time by time.
A paradigm is a perception about the way things are. If you are thinking you look bad that is a paradigm and a really bad one actually. Those kind of paradigms are about yourself and your life. We do not have paradigms only of ourselves but also about others. You can think of a person one way but then another you could have a shift and think of them a total other way. This is a paradigm shift. It is when you think one way and then switch to think another way.
Some other bad paradigms are if you are friend-centered, stuff-centered, boyfriend/girlfriend-centered, school-centered, and parent-centered. If you base your life around these things it will hurt you in your future life as an adult. What you should be focused on are the principles of life which are honesty, love, service, hard work, respect, gratitude, moderation, fairness, integrity, loyalty, and responsibilities. There cannot be too much of one but everything needs to be equal for the system to be perfect. With these paradigms you will get ahead in life. Sean is an adult who wants to share, with teens in particular, how he spent his time in high school. This chapter is just introducing the seven habits he will talk about during the entire book which are:
Habit 1: Being proactive Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind Habit 3: Put first things first Habit 4: Think win-win Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood Habit 6: Synergize Habit 7: Sharpen the saw These habits chain from one another. You can't skip any habits. From the first,, having to take responsibility for your life, to renewing yourself time to time. With these 7 steps you can change yourself to be the best you can possibly be. People need to take the time and do these steps to create a better person. If you don't like a thing about yourself you can change it by renewing yourself. What went well?
What could they improve?
